2012 Mainly Mozart Spotlight Series Brings Classical Music to La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, and Carlsbad
In partnership with the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe in Rancho Santa Fe, St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Carlsbad, and The Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla, Mainly Mozart’s five-star classical music Spotlight Series runs through June 23.

French Impressions

Debussy’s mix of modernism and sensuality placed him among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th century. Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto

Tchaikovsky’s dazzling violin concerto is a test of skill for any violinist, but Vadim Gluzman, who performed Brahms last season in Orange County, is up to the task. Korean pianist Joyce Yang offers Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto, one of the repertoire’s most powerful, most demanding and most popular works. A New Day – Celebrating Nowruz

The City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office presents “This Is Jazz!” an Informative, interactive and engaging, free lecture series that traces the development of America’s greatest contribution to the arts. San Diego jazz expert, author and media personality Dirk Sutro presents four lectures which include multimedia overviews of the topic, live demonstrations by musical guests and lively discussions between artists and audience. “This Is Jazz!” explores the primary directions, styles and artists of the music that gave the world Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Billie Holliday, Charlie Parker, Dave Brubeck, Wynton Marsalis and other unforgettable players and voices.
“This Is Jazz!” programs are held on Saturdays at 4 p.m. in the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium at the Carlsbad City Library complex, 1775 Dove Lane at El Camino Real. Seating is limited. An exciting and engaging performer, at once both a striking song stylist and a fearless improviser, Janis Mann is a true jazz singer in the manner of Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, and Shirley Horn. Janis’ rich timbre, flexibility, and range often invite comparisons to Sarah Vaughan.
Southern California trumpet virtuoso Gilbert Castellanos has been recognized as a new American master by Downbeat magazine. Castellanos has established himself as one of the nation’s most inventive improvisers in stirring live performances as a member of the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Anthony Wilson Nonet, Charles McPherson Quintet, Willie Jones III Quintet, and as leader of his own groups.
San Diego’s premiere electric guitarist, Peter Sprague has performed with everyone from Chick Corea and Diane Reeves to David Benoit and Charlie Hayden, plus every single San Diego jazz player who can keep up with him. The groups Peter has established for making music include Brasilia, Pass The Drum, and The String Consort.
Pianist Lynn Willard, co-founder of ESP, the versatile Miles Davis inspired quintet, is an in-demand keyboardist on the local jazz scene, performing with Big Time Operator, Dave Scott, Gilbert Castellanos, Tokeli Mushovic, Sacha Boutros, Steve Feierabend and Bob Magnussen. |
