From the day Bing Crosby greeted the first fans that passed through the gates in 1937, to the famous race of Seabiscuit, where he beat Ligaroti by a nose in 1938, Del Mar Thoroughbred Horse Racing established itself as the real deal and as a playground for the many stars that passed through its storied turnstiles.
Among the Hollywood legends seen at Del Mar included a virtual A-list of stars that included, “Ah yes,” W.C. Fields, Edgar Bergen, June Haver, Dorothy Lamour and Ava Gardner, just to name a few. Last Summer, if you were lucky and stuck around for one of the Four O’Clock Friday night concerts, you would have seen Gavin Rossdale perform live on the Plaza de Mexico Stage, and if you leaned far enough over the balcony rail above, you might possibly have caught a glimpse of Gwen Stefani.
Bing Crosby’s final visit to the Del Mar track was in 1977, but his famous rendition of his song “Where the Turf Meets the Surf” forever lives on...and so does all the glitz and excitement of Del Mar Thoroughbred Horse Racing!
Opening Day has become one of the hottest tickets in San Diego and is expected to draw 40,000-plus and includes the Fabulous Hats Contest. Other events include micro-brew festivals, book signings, handicapping seminars, and family weekends. Season begins July 22 and runs until Sept 9.
