Cirque du Soleil at the Del Mar Fairgrounds
|
|
Feb. 25-Mar 28 Tickets www.cirquedusoleil.com
Get ready for the circus experience of a lifetime! Coming to the Del Mar Fairgrounds February 25 to March 28, this year’s Cirque du Soleil’s KOOZA is their most thrilling, intriguing, and entertaining show ever.
KOOZA’s acrobatic performers will take you on a fun-filled, emotional, sensual and dangerous journey of imagination that will have your heart pounding and your eyes popping. KOOZA is not the usual circus of clowns, high wire and trapeze acts, but a beautifully and skillfully choreographed show that incorporates perfection and timing. Clowns in outlandish costumes and make-up perform exotic and daring acrobatics on elaborate sets under their trademark blue and yellow Grand Chapiteau (big top), that shock and surprise audiences, taking them to heights they have never before experienced. An international assemblage of the most skilled clowns and acrobats return this year to the origins of Cirque du Soleil. KOOZA highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendor and fragility incorporating dance, music, acrobatics, and drama.
The writers, directors, choreographers, costume designers, engineers, musicians, and performers of KOOZA all understand that interaction and subsequent reaction of the audience is what circus is all about. According to KOOZA author and director, David Shiner, “KOOZA centers on the skill and wonder of the artists. It’s about the connection with the audience.”
The 1,600 pound Wheel of Death rotates at heart stopping speeds, powered by two performers who leap and counter-rotate in a death defying display of fearless acrobatics and teamwork. It is one of the most spectacular and dangerous stunts of the show. The level of artistry, timing, difficulty and danger will cause you to hold your breath, then stand up and applaud for the performers’ magnificent feats.

Teach Third-Graders about their Community
|
|
Do you think the youth of today should know more about local government and free enterprise? If you do, take this opportunity to teach third graders about those topics through the award-winning CityStuff program.
In a groundbreaking partnership, the City of Carlsbad and Junior Achievement have joined together to produce the CityStuff school program that uses engaging, hands-on activities to show how local government functions and demonstrate the basics of business.
Volunteers are equipped with age-appropriate lessons, two books (Fast Facts 101 and Carlsbad Becomes a City) and bolstered by training in classroom management. Each volunteer visits a specific third-grade classroom one hour a week for six weeks. The first four lessons show what it takes to build and maintain a city. Volunteers present the Carlsbad books and share their experiences while discussing restaurants, newspapers, banking and zoning.
The fifth and sixth Carlsbad lessons focus on democracy in action. Students learn how every vote counts -- only one vote set the framework for Carlsbad to become a city. The sixth session is a scripted mock council meeting held in the Council chambers. The students experience democracy in action.
CityStuff is made possible thanks to the generous support of area businesses and organizations. Donations support the production of materials. Current sponsors include Gemological Institute of America, Poseidon Resources Corporation and Waste Management.
Volunteers are being chosen for this spring. Contact Kathy at citystuff1@gmail.com or (760) 436-0140 to get involved in this program.

Four-Legged Friends Help Support New Fallbrook Library
|
|
With about 10 months remaining before the new Fallbrook Library opens, everyone in the community is chipping in to make sure the new facility is fully furnished and it shelves stocked with books.
Support for the library has come from familiar and some unusual sources. When the library opens its doors in October 2010, one of the paver bricks in the Poet’ s Patio will recognize a long-time library volunteer – Cobie, a 7-year-old gray and white Shetland sheep dog owned by Nancy Townley.
Townley has donated $500 in Cobie’s name to the library, which still needs another $500,000 for book collections, to complete the Outdoor Reading Garden, a baby grand piano, theater lighting and a sound system for the community room, which will serve as Fallbrook’s meeting place, according to the Friends of Fallbrook Library, a volunteer-based, non-profit group.
“We’ve had Fallbrook residents make donations in their pet’s names to the Fallbrook Land Conservancy so we welcome the opportunity to put Cobie’s name on a donor brick at the new library,” said Marlo Miller, president of the Friends of Fallbrook Library. “With so many animal lovers in our community what a great way to recognize our four-legged friends.”
Not only has Cobie helped kids to learn to read through the “Paws to Read” program, but he is a certified therapy dog who brings his own brand of canine comfort to patients in assisted living facilities and hospitals as well.
The Friends of Fallbrook Library already has raised $2.3 million to furnish the new library with chairs, tables, shelves, books, computers and carpeting. The group also has provided funding for more than a half dozen art features at the library and assisted county library officials by providing valuable input about everything from architecture to community needs and requirements.
Miller said donations opportunities for paver bricks in the Poet’s Patio range from $250 to $500. She also mentioned that library supporters can makes donations for hand-made tiles on the library’s donor wall as well to help defray some of the anticipated costs. Tile donations start at $1,500. Naming opportunities also are still available for areas of the library and various rooms.
